“Love Thang” (DJ Enki edit)

Written by DJ Enki on May 1, 2014 – 3:03 pm -

Got a nice new old tune for y’all! It’s my very own edit of First Choice’s disco classic “Love Thang,” gently remolded. I didn’t add anything to it (not my usual M.O., I know), but instead took things away and redid the arrangement to bring the funk out and emphasize the parts DJs know and love. You can cop it at my brand spanking new Bandcamp page–hope you dig it!

Grown Kids Radio mix: Summer Funk

Written by DJ Enki on July 11, 2012 – 6:06 am -

M’man and fellow 45 Sessioner E Da Boss hollered at me to do a mix for Grown Kids Radio. How could I say no? So I put together a half hour of funk tunes that sound great when bumped on a nice summer day. Head on over to Grown Kids Radio to listen and/or download!

Here’s the track listing:

Earth, Wind & Fire – “Moment of Truth”
The Joe Tex Band – “Chocolate Cherry”
Bobby Byrd – “Keep Doing What You’re Doing”
Edwin Starr – “Adios Senorita”
The Fatback Band – “Put the Funk on You”
Finished Touch – “Mighty Good Friends”
The Nite-Liters – “Down and Dirty”
Herbie Hancock – “Fat Mama”
Doris – “Don’t”
Honey Cone – “Stick Up”
Rosetta Hightower – “A Little More Line”
Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – “Little Ole Boy, Little Ole Girl”

“Rescue Me” (DJ Enki remix)

I gave A Taste of Honey’s classic groove a quick touchup–rearrangement, more drums, more bump. Check it out.

“Mann Up”

Written by DJ Enki on March 30, 2012 – 5:56 pm -

One from the hard-drive archives: This cut from 2008 was originally meant to be the follow up to “Kung Fu Kwaku,” but somewhere along the line, it got lost in the sauce, and I pretty much forgot about it, except that it occasionally pops up on my iPod. I also made this track in order to take on two technical challenges:

1. Simulate stereo sampling with the SP-1200
2. See if I could freak a bass line to make it do things the original record doesn’t do at all

It was kinda cool to figure those things out as I went along. Hell, I’m not even sure if I could do that bass line again–I’d have to go back to the Pro Tools session and see if I can figure out what I did.

“Red Line Radio” (DJ Enki remix)

Written by DJ Enki on December 30, 2011 – 6:27 pm -

My man Headnodic gave me the acapella to the song “Red Line Radio” (featuring Raashan Ahmad and Moe Pope) from his album, and, well, you know what that means. Reeeeeeeeemix! I knew I had to come aggressive with this one because of the way the guys were rhyming, so I chopped up some drums, grabbed an energetic loop, and, well, everything else fell into place. Check it out!

New mix: “Bacon the Funk”

Written by DJ Enki on May 4, 2010 – 6:58 pm -

Wow, have I been slacking on the updates! My apologies. I’m back with something serious, though: A brand new mix that is a musical tribute to ham, pork, and the king of all foods, bacon. It’s called “Bacon the Funk,” and you can get the full tracklist and stream it and/or download it over at Mixcrate.com. You can also download it right here. I’m really happy with how this mix came out, and the response has been great–it’s even getting foodie props! Big ups to all the swine eaters out there!
