DJ Enki with The Beatnuts and Tha Alkaholiks

Written by DJ Enki on August 23, 2012 – 4:59 am -

At last week’s 45 Session, who should show up but The Beatnuts and Tha Alkaholiks! I knew what had to be done, so I pulled out a few breaks to cut up–strictly 45s!–and let the mic pros get busy. I’d definitely say rocking doubles of the Bill Doggett break for Juju ranks as a highlight for me. Sorry about the video quality here, but you can at least hear what went down.

We’re excited he’s finally able to come bless the 45 Sessions with a set, and you should be, too, because much like Poor Righteous Teachers, he’s gonna rock this funky joint.

Track the Movement (Sat. Nov. 5)

Written by DJ Enki on November 2, 2011 – 4:03 am -

Don't lose it!

Hey, you guys remember rap records, don’t you? Hip-hop DJs used to spin them before Serato took over the game.

Jerry Nice remembers rap records, so he started this dope party called Track the Movement that gave us DJs who still keep shelves full of dope rap wax a place to spin those records. I did this party last year and had a real good time revisiting my collection–I have some records I had forgotten about!–and now it’s time for me to invade again and get busy with it. If you love that good ol’ rap music, then this is definitely the party for you. Better yet, it’s free, and there are plenty of drink specials, so come kick it and get down to some great tunes.

Saturday, November 5

The Showdown (6th & Market, SF)
10pm-2am
Jerry Nice and DJ Enki spin top-quality rap strictly off wax. No computers allowed!
No cover!

Ottawa, October 29: Grind!

Written by DJ Enki on October 18, 2011 – 5:53 am -

Back in 2009, I did some gigs up in Ottawa and Montreal, Canada, and I had a great time. In particular, the Grind party in Ottawa was one of the best times I’ve ever had DJing. It’s taken a couple years, but I’m back for another round at Grind! The homie Jon Deck hit me up, and as an added bonus, he said the Halloween edition of Grind is always one of the best ones of the year. How could I resist? I couldn’t, that’s how. I’m seriously excited for this one, and if you’re in Ottawa on October 29, I very highly recommend that you come through, because it’s gonna be an insanely good time.

July 21-22: 45 Session and dirty bass/club jam

Written by DJ Enki on July 14, 2011 – 3:29 am -

Oh yeah, it’s back-to-back parties July 21-22. First, the funky-fresh 45 Session in Oakland. Then, the bass-heavy, grimy Greasetrap party in San Francisco. No matter which side of the Bay you’re on, I’ve got a dope party for you. And if food is an extra enticement for you, know that Disco Volante (where we’re doing the 45 Sessions) has quality grub, while the Greasetrap happens right next door to the homie Christian Ciscle’s amazing new chicken wings spot, Wing Wings (you really need to holler at the Jamaican jerk wings–they’re ridiculously good), which will be open late to cater to your post-party needs. You can’t front on deals like these! Check the facts below, and come get your groove on.

The 45 Sessions are back!

Written by DJ Enki on February 2, 2011 – 4:33 am -

Big dudes. Little records.

This right here is serious business, y’all. After a brief hiatus, the 45 Sessions, aka the best damn party in Oakland, are back. And we’re back in style! We’re breaking new ground by taking this party to the legendary Yoshi’s jazz club. This is a big deal, as this is the first party of its kind to get into Yoshi’s, and you best believe we’re gonna do justice to this moment. In fact, we’re bringing out a heavy hitter for this one: The one and only DJ Shortkut. If you’ve never seen Short get busy with 45s, you are in for a treat, as he’s one of the nicest around when it comes to rocking the little records. And of course, your residents DJ Platurn, E Da Boss, and me will be bringing the flavor as well. You really don’t want to miss out on this. Here’s the rundown:

Wednesday, February 23

Yoshi’s (510 Embarcadero, Oakland)
10pm-2am
The 45 Session: DJ Shortkut, DJ Platurn, E Da Boss, and DJ Enki spin funk, disco, hip-hop, rock, breaks, boogie, and all sorts of great tunes on nothing but 45s

Just Hangin’ Out (Thursday, September 30)

Written by DJ Enki on September 22, 2010 – 6:36 am -

I like to hang out and hustle with my friends

Come September 30, I get to do something I really love doing: Spin 1990s hip-hop. E Da Boss and I are taking it to the Layover in Oakland: Strictly vinyl, and digging a little deeper than the standard Golden Era set you’ve heard a million times. We’re definitely pulling out some joints for this one. And the best part is that it’s free! Don’t sleep!

Thursday, September 30

The Layover (1517 Franklin St. Oakland)
10pm-2am
Just Hangin’ Out: E Da Boss and DJ Enki spin 1990s hip-hop wax

The 45 Session (Saturday, September 18)

Written by DJ Enki on September 14, 2010 – 5:54 pm -

The 45 Session--it's on and poppin'

Once again it’s on!

I’m not kidding when I say this is my favorite ongoing party: The 45 Sessions that happen every third Saturday at the Layover in Oakland. It just reminds me of what’s fun about DJing: Anything goes as far as selection is concerned (as long as it’s on a 45, of course), and the crowd at this cool little spot is totally down to boogie to whatever you throw at ’em. Funk, disco, rock, breaks, classic, unknown, whatever–if it’s good, it’s good. Plus, in this Serato age, it really is nice to put all the bells and whistles aside and just spin real records. (And of course there’s the show-and-prove aspect: If you don’t have a good collection and good skills, you can’t hang.) I know I’m pulling out some special gems for this outing, and I’m betting the homie Platurn is as well. It’s gonna be just Platurn and me rocking the decks all night long, so you know you need to bust out your dancing shoes and get ready for some quality DJing! Here is the Facebook event page with all the details, but for those who would rather not deal with the evil that is Facebook, here’s the rundown:

Saturday, September 18

The Layover (1517 Franklin St. Oakland)
10pm-2am
The 45 Session: DJ Platurn and DJ Enki spin funk, disco, hip-hop, rock, breaks, boogie, and all sorts of great tunes on nothing but 45s
